Connor McDavid has been as dominant as ever in his first Olympic Games, and now he stands alone in the record books.
McDavid has now scored the most points of any player in a single Olympic tournament with NHL participation after collecting two assists in Canada's come-from-behind 3-2 win over Finland in the semifinals.
His 13 points put him two ahead of Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne, who each had 11 points to help Finland win the silver medal in 2006.
McDavid now has two goals and 11 assists in the tournament after assisting on Sam Reinhart's second-period goal and Nathan MacKinnon's clutch game-winner Friday.
MacKinnon's goal came in the final minute of regulation and gave Canada its first lead of the game.
“We’re putting our country through it. A lot of stressful mornings for everyone back home, but you know what, it’s been fun," McDavid told Kyle Bukauskas on the CBC Olympics broadcast after the game. "It’s a best-on-best tournament, I keep on saying that, we’re playing the best teams in the world, the best players in the world, and they’re going at it, giving everything they have."
McDavid set the record while wearing the captain's 'C' for Canada for the first time in the tournament after Sidney Crosby was unable to play due to injury. While Crosby's status remains up in the air for Sunday's gold-medal game (8 a.m. ET/ 5 a.m. PT on CBC and Sportsnet), McDavid said it was an honour to wear the letter in his absence.
"Hopefully just borrowing it, keeping the C warm for him," McDavid said. "It’s a special thing to represent your country, to wear the 'C' for a group like this, it means everything to me."
McDavid and Team Canada will face the United States in the gold-medal game on Sunday at 8:10 a.m. ET / 5:10 a.m. PT on CBC and Sportsnet.
